Bayer coined the German trade name Heroin in 1898 for its new cough remedy, building it on the Greek root heros (ἥρως, hero) with the chemical suffix -in, because early users reported feeling heroic. Greek later adopted this coined word back, adapting it to the native feminine noun pattern in -ίνη already used for chemical terms like καφεΐνη (caffeine) and μορφίνη (morphine).
