Etymology
Greek borrowed this word directly from French "style" in the twentieth century, alongside the more traditional Greek term "ύφος". French "style" comes from Latin "stilus", the pointed writing tool Romans used on wax tablets, which gave the word its later sense of a personal manner of writing or expression. Some etymologists trace "stilus" back to a root meaning "to prick" or "to stick", the same idea behind a sharp point.
