Etymology
Μείωση is a noun formed from the verb μειώνω, meaning to reduce or diminish. That verb goes back to ancient Greek μείων, the irregular comparative meaning less or smaller. The same ancient root gave English the biological term meiosis, borrowed directly from Greek μείωσις to describe the cell division that reduces chromosome number by half.
