Etymology
Τα is the neuter plural of the Modern Greek definite article, which continues the Ancient Greek article ὁ, ἡ, τό. The neuter form τό, and its plural τά, go back to a Proto-Indo-European demonstrative stem. Over time this demonstrative hardened into the ordinary article system of Greek, and its plural form also does double duty as a neuter plural clitic pronoun meaning 'them'.
