Etymology
Greek borrowed τατουάζ directly from French tatouage in the 20th century. French in turn took the word from English tattoo, which sailors picked up from Polynesian languages, likely Tahitian tatau, meaning to mark or strike. The Greek form kept the French pronunciation and spelling pattern rather than adapting the English one.
