Etymology

The word joins φίλο- (loving, fond of) with δώρημα (a gift or thing given), itself from δῶρον (gift) and the verb δωρέομαι (to give as a gift). The result nouns in -μα mark the outcome of an action, so φιλοδώρημα literally names the product of an affectionate act of giving. Modern Greek uses it as the formal term for a tip left for service.
