ομολογώto admit, to confessομολογίαadmission, statementEtymology
The word comes from the verb εξομολογούμαι, built from the prefix εξ- (out, thoroughly) added to ομολογώ (to agree, to admit). Ομολογώ itself joins ομός (same) with λόγος (word, speech), so the root sense is speaking the same word as another, that is, agreeing or admitting something openly. The noun εξομολόγηση then names the act of that open admission, later narrowed in church usage to the sacrament of confession.
