Etymology
Împărat traces back to Latin imperator, meaning commander or emperor, from imperare, to command. The word did not pass into Romanian directly from Latin, but through Old Church Slavonic, which had already borrowed and reshaped the Latin term. That Slavic filter explains the shift from Latin's initial im- to Romanian's î-.
