Etymology

Lecție came into Romanian from French leçon, which descends from Latin lectio, meaning a reading or a lesson. Lectio is built on legere, to read or to gather. The same Latin verb gives English lecture and legible. The underlying sense is picking out letters with the eyes, which narrowed over time to the act of reading and then to a unit of instruction.
