Romanian presă was borrowed from French presse, itself from Latin pressare, a frequentative form of premere, "to press, squeeze." The word entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French-derived vocabulary tied to printing and journalism. Presa is the definite form of presă, and it came to mean both the physical printing press and, by extension, the news media as a whole.
