Etymology

Presă entered Romanian from French presse in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian deliberately absorbed French and Latin vocabulary to modernize the language. French presse descends from Latin pressare, a frequentative form of premere, meaning to press or squeeze. The sense narrowed to the printing press and then widened again to mean the news media as a whole, a shift that also happened in French and English.
