Etymology

The origin of brânză is not settled. Most Romanian dictionaries list it as etymology unknown, and it does not come from Latin caseus, the source of the cheese words in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Linguists suspect it survives from the pre-Roman substrate language spoken in the region before Roman rule, alongside a small set of other everyday words. No confirmed Indo-European root has been established.
