Distrez is the first-person singular present of a (se) distra, borrowed from French distraire. French distraire descends from Latin distrahere, built from dis- ("apart") and trahere ("to pull, draw"). The core sense shifted from "to pull someone's attention away" to "to entertain" or, reflexively, "to have fun." The deeper origin of Latin trahere is debated among linguists, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root is given here.
