Etymology
Distracție entered Romanian from French distraction, which itself came from Latin distractio, a noun built on distrahere, meaning to pull apart or divert. French distraction covered both absent-mindedness and amusement, and Romanian kept mainly the amusement sense for distracție, while a separate word, distragere, handles the sense of diverting one's attention. The Latin verb trahere, to draw or pull, has no securely reconstructed Indo-European root, so none is given here.
