Etymology

Romanian "martin" comes from French, where the bird's full name is "martin-pêcheur" (literally "Martin the fisherman"). The personal name Martin was used in French as a stock name for common animals, much as "Renard" became the everyday French word for fox. Romanian borrowed the name directly and later added its own translation of "pêcheur" to form the fuller compound "martin pescăraș".
