Etymology
Romanian borrowed 'gardă' from French 'garde' in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French 'garde' itself traces to Frankish, a Germanic language, where a root meaning 'to watch over' entered Old French with its initial sound shifting from 'w' to 'gu'. That same Germanic root, unshifted, gave English 'ward' and, through French, English 'guard' as well.
