Etymology
Împrumut is a noun built from the verb a împrumuta, which goes back to Vulgar Latin impromutuare, itself formed from the prefix in- plus mutuare, related to Latin mutuus, meaning borrowed or mutual. The prefix î(m)- marks direction into a state, so the word originally pictured putting something into a mutual exchange. Romanian kept this as its plain word for a loan, both in everyday speech and in banking.
