Etymology
Înăuntru is built from the prefix în- ("in, into") plus lăuntru, an older Romanian word for "the inside" that traces back to Latin ad intro, "toward the interior." The Latin adverb intro itself is formed on the same root as the simple preposition in. So the Romanian word essentially stacks two markers of "inside-ness" on top of each other. The same Latin base shows up in the everyday Romanian verb a intra, "to enter."
