Etymology
Știu is the first person singular (and third person plural) present of the verb a ști, which descends from Latin scire, 'to know'. Most other Romance languages built their verb for knowing on Latin sapere instead, which is why Italian has sapere and Spanish and French have saber and savoir. Romanian kept the scire root, so a ști stands apart from its Romance relatives and lines up more closely with English words like science and conscience, which also come from scire.
