Etymology
The Romanian noun "țar" was borrowed from Russian царь (tsar), a title that itself traces back to Latin "Caesar" through Church Slavonic. The form "țare" is not a separate word but the vocative singular of "țar", built with the old vocative ending "-e" that Romanian attaches to masculine nouns denoting rulers, such as "împărat" becoming "împărate". Romania itself never had a tsar, so the word entered the language mainly through history books and translated Russian literature.
