"Ține" is the third-person singular present (and imperative) form of the verb "a ține," which comes from Latin "tenere," meaning to hold. That Latin verb is also behind the Romanian derivatives "susține" (to support), "conține" (to contain), and "reține" (to retain). Latin "tenere" itself goes back to the PIE root "*ten-," to stretch, since holding something firm originally meant pulling it taut.
