Etymology
Carte descends from Latin charta, meaning a sheet of papyrus or paper. Latin borrowed the word from Greek khartēs, which named a leaf of papyrus. Over time the Romanian sense narrowed from a single sheet to a bound collection of sheets, that is, a book.
