Etymology

This particle comes from Latin "ad", the preposition meaning "to, toward". As Romanian shifted away from the Latin synthetic infinitive, "ad" was reanalyzed as a short marker placed before the bare verb stem, much as French keeps "à" in some infinitive constructions. Dictionaries still cite Romanian verbs this way, so every verb entry begins with "a": "a fi" (to be), "a face" (to do).
