Etymology

Abandonată is the feminine form of abandonat, the past participle of the verb a abandona. Romanian borrowed this verb from French abandonner in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language with French vocabulary. The French word itself goes back to the phrase mettre à bandon, meaning to place under someone's control or at their disposal, later reversed in sense to mean giving something up entirely.
