Etymology
Turmă comes from Latin turma, which in the Roman army meant a troop of cavalry, a squadron of about thirty horsemen. As the word passed into popular Latin and then Romanian, the military sense faded and the meaning shifted toward any tightly grouped band of animals moving together, a herd or flock. The deeper origin of Latin turma itself is not settled among etymologists, so no earlier root is given here.
