Etymology
Amesteca comes from a Latin verb built on miscere, "to mix", with the prefix ad- fused onto it. Romanian dictionaries trace it to the popular Latin form ammixticare. The prefix intensified the base verb, and over centuries the sounds fused into the single word amesteca. The plain root mesteca, without the prefix, is a separate word in Romanian meaning "to chew", from Latin masticare, so the two must not be confused.
