Etymology
Romanian pix comes from German Pix, a brand name once used for a retractable pencil or pen. As with several everyday objects named after early twentieth century trademarks, the brand name became the ordinary word for the object itself. The borrowing entered Romanian vocabulary for manufactured goods, alongside many other technical and commercial terms taken from German and French. Because it is a modern trademark-derived loan, it has no older Indo-European root behind it.
