Etymology
Aparține was formed in Romanian on the model of French appartenir and Italian appartenere, both descending from Latin adpertinere, itself built from ad- ("toward") plus pertinere ("to extend to, pertain"). Pertinere in turn breaks down into per- ("through") and tenere ("to hold"). So the word's deep sense is something like "to hold through, toward" something, which settled into "to belong."
