Etymology

Romanian "orient" was borrowed from French "orient" during the 19th-century relatinization of Romanian vocabulary. The French word goes back to Latin "oriens, orientis", the present participle of "oriri", meaning "to rise". It originally named the point on the horizon where the sun rises, and from there came to mean the East as a direction and later as a cultural region.
