Etymology
Afirma entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French affirmer in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian scholars reshaped the language on Romance models. French affirmer descends from Latin affirmare, a compound of the prefix ad- (toward) and firmare (to make firm), itself from firmus (firm, steady). The core sense is literal: to make a statement firm by asserting it.
