Cuprinde comes from Latin comprehendere, formed from com- (together, thoroughly) and prehendere (to seize, grasp). Romanian kept the same shape but split it in everyday speech into cu- and prinde, the ordinary verb for catching or grabbing something. English comprehend and French comprendre come from the same Latin verb but stayed mostly abstract, meaning to understand. Romanian went further, using cuprinde for physical containment, written scope, and the sudden grip of an emotion.
