Etymology

Romanian borrowed "inevitabil" from French "inévitable" during the 19th-century modernization of the language, when many Latinate abstract adjectives entered Romanian through French. Both trace back to Latin "inevitabilis", built from the negative prefix "in-" and "evitabilis", itself from the verb "evitare", to avoid. The Latin verb combines "e-" (out, away) with "vitare" (to shun, avoid).
