Etymology
Romanian "ajun" was borrowed from Old Church Slavonic, where the word denoted the fast kept the day before a major religious feast. That Slavonic term itself traces back to Latin "ieiunus" (fasting, empty-stomached), the same Latin word that gave English "jejune." Over time in Romanian the meaning shifted from the fast itself to the day or evening on which the fast happened, and then more broadly to "the day before" any event.
