Etymology
Romanian builds its conditional mood with a short auxiliary that changes by person: aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar. These forms do not come from the Latin present of habere as in French or Italian. They come from its pluperfect subjunctive: habuissem, habuisses, habuisset, and so on. The third-person form habuisset wore down over centuries of sound change into the modern Romanian ar.
