Etymology
Alergat is the supine and past participle of the verb a alerga, to run. Most Romanian dictionaries trace a alerga to the Latin verb allargare, built from ad- and largus, wide. The original sense was to widen or to let loose, and in Romanian it shifted to mean run. The suffix -at simply marks the past participle of first-conjugation verbs, the same pattern seen in cântat or lucrat.
