Etymology

Romanian borrowed "alert" from French "alerte". French took the word from the Italian phrase "all'erta", meaning roughly "to the height" or "on watch", used by sentries who kept lookout from a raised, steep position. The Italian "erta" itself goes back to Latin "erecta", the feminine form of "erectus", raised or upright.
