Etymology
Romanian borrowed "morgă" from French "morgue." In French, the word first meant a solemn or defiant look on someone's face. It later named the room where officials examined new prisoners or unidentified corpses, looking closely at their faces to record their identity. From there it settled into its modern sense: a mortuary building. Romanian kept both the concrete sense (mortuary) and, less commonly, the older figurative one (a stiff, haughty air).
