Etymology

Apus is the past participle of the verb a apune, meaning to set, as the sun or a star does. Romanian dictionaries trace a apune to the Latin verb apponere, formed from the prefix ad- and ponere, to put or place. Over time the sense narrowed from a general placing or setting down to the specific image of the sun sinking below the horizon, and from there it extended to mean the west and, figuratively, decline or an ending.
