Etymology

Cămin comes from Latin caminus, meaning furnace or fireplace, which Latin itself borrowed from Greek kaminos. The word first meant the hearth at the center of a house, then widened to mean the home built around that hearth. In modern Romanian it has also come to label institutional residences, such as student dormitories or care homes.
