Etymology

Romanian borrowed "partener" from French "partenaire" in the modern period, as the language absorbed French vocabulary for social and professional life. The feminine form "parteneră" was then built on the native pattern of adding "-ă" to a masculine noun, the same way "prieten" gives "prietenă". The French word itself goes back to English "partner", from Anglo-Norman "parcener" (a co-heir), tied to Latin "pars" (a part or share).
