Etymology
Romanian borrowed "metrou" from French "métro" in the 20th century, well before Bucharest's subway opened in 1979. "Métro" is itself a clipped form of "chemin de fer métropolitain", literally "metropolitan railway". "Métropolitain" goes back through Latin to Greek "mētropolis", built from "mētēr" (mother) and "polis" (city), a term for a city that founded colonies. The short form spread into many languages alongside the technology itself.
