Etymology

Arăta descends from a Vulgar Latin form built on rectus, meaning straight or right, with the prefix ad- added to give the sense of directing something toward a point. Over time ad-rectare became the Romanian infinitive arăta, keeping the core idea of pointing something out or making it visible. The same Latin root rectus gives Romanian drept, meaning straight or right, and the two words are close cousins.
