Etymology
Ast is the worn-down masculine form of the Romanian demonstrative acest, this. Vulgar Latin built such demonstratives by bolting the presentative particle ecce, behold, onto the pronoun iste, giving a form like ecce istum. In Romanian this became ace- plus a stem ist/ast, and in casual or rural speech people dropped the ace- prefix, leaving ast to stand on its own. That same stem survives locked inside astăzi, today, literally this day, and astfel, thus, literally this kind.
