Peste is a native Romanian preposition inherited from Latin, most likely a development of super, meaning over or above. Romance languages built many of their spatial prepositions from this same Latin word, and Romanian kept both a shortened form, spre (towards), and this fuller form, peste. Over time peste extended from physical position to time and quantity, so it now covers a ball flying over a fence, a meeting in an hour, and a crowd of over a hundred people.
