Deasupra is built from the prefix de- attached to asupra, an older Romanian word meaning 'upon' or 'on'. Asupra itself goes back to Latin ad plus supra, with supra meaning 'above' or 'over'. Adding de- reinforced the sense of position, giving deasupra its meaning of being directly above or on top of something. It belongs to a family of Romanian locative adverbs built from Latin spatial words.
