Ucid is the first person singular and third person plural present form of a ucide, from Latin occidere, meaning to kill or cut down. Occidere was itself built from the prefix ob- and the verb caedere, to cut or strike. Romanian kept the compound but wore the prefix down to a bare u-, leaving the old root visible only to the trained eye.
