Etymology
Străin descends from Latin extraneus, meaning external or from outside. The initial ex- eroded away over centuries of sound change in Vulgar Latin, leaving the str- cluster that Romanian kept. The same Latin root spread across the Romance languages with a similar sense of foreignness or strangeness.
