Etymology

Grămadă entered Romanian from a South Slavic source, related to Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian words for a heap or pile of stones. Slavic settlement and long contact in the Balkans left Romanian with many such everyday nouns for shape and quantity. The word kept its concrete sense, a stacked mass of things, and later extended to mean a large quantity of anything, including work or trouble.
