Etymology
Romanian borrowed "apropo" from French "à propos" in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian absorbed many French words for polite conversation. The French phrase means literally "to the purpose" and comes from "propos", from Latin "propositum", the thing put forward. Romanian fused the French phrase into one invariable word and kept its function as a way to steer a conversation toward a related topic.
