Etymology

Romanian "dur" was borrowed from French "dur" during the 19th-century wave of relatinization, when Romanian scholars pulled in Western Romance vocabulary to modernize the language. French "dur" in turn descends from Latin "durus", meaning hard or tough. This makes "dur" a later addition alongside older, directly inherited Latin words, rather than an unbroken survival from spoken Latin in the region.
